How do you count to ten in Vietnamese?
One to ten in Vietnamese is một, hai, ba, bốn, năm, sáu, bảy, tám, chín, mười. Bigger numbers are built logically: 20 is hai mươi ("two tens"), 100 is một trăm and 1,000 is một nghìn (một ngàn in the south). A few sound changes — mốt, lăm, tư — are the only irregular parts.
Numbers 1–10
| Number | Vietnamese |
|---|---|
| 1 | một |
| 2 | hai |
| 3 | ba |
| 4 | bốn |
| 5 | năm |
| 6 | sáu |
| 7 | bảy |
| 8 | tám |
| 9 | chín |
| 10 | mười |
Tens and the three sound changes
- 11–19: mười + digit — 11 mười một, 12 mười hai.
- Tens: digit + mươi (no accent) — 20 hai mươi, 30 ba mươi.
- 5 after a ten becomes lăm: 15 mười lăm, 25 hai mươi lăm.
- 1 after 20+ becomes mốt: 21 hai mươi mốt (but 11 is mười một).
- 4 after 20+ is often tư: 24 hai mươi tư.
Hundreds, thousands and millions
| Number | Vietnamese |
|---|---|
| 100 | một trăm |
| 105 | một trăm linh năm (north) / một trăm lẻ năm (south) |
| 1,000 | một nghìn (north) / một ngàn (south) |
| 10,000 | mười nghìn |
| 100,000 | một trăm nghìn |

Prices in Vietnam are large numbers — 50,000 đồng is năm mươi nghìn, often shortened to năm mươi.
Frequently asked questions
Why is 5 sometimes năm and sometimes lăm?
Năm becomes lăm after mười or mươi (15, 25, 35…), because it is easier to say. As a standalone number or in the tens place it stays năm (50 = năm mươi).
How do you use numbers with nouns in Vietnamese?
Put a classifier between the number and the noun: hai cái bàn (two tables), ba con mèo (three cats). See the classifiers guide.
